In Charlotte's vibrant NoDa neighborhood, nestled within the bustling Camp North End, there lies a bakery that could very well be the stuff of legends - Wentworth & Fenn. Commanded by the culinary wizardry of Chef Sam Ward, this establishment isn't just a bakery; it's a beacon of hope, a testament to the resilience of local small businesses in the face of adversity. You see, Chef Sam had to close her uptown location due to the all-too-familiar tale of high overheads and low foot traffic, a stark reminder of the fragility of our beloved local haunts. It's upon learning this that I felt a renewed urgency to support our local gems, and what better way to do this than by indulging in the culinary delights of Wentworth & Fenn?
Armed with the determination of a foodie on a mission, I set my alarm clock with military precision, ensuring I'd arrive just in time to sample their famed Saturday bakery specials. The menu? A smorgasbord of freshly baked wonders that could tempt even the most disciplined of eaters.
Peering into the display case, my eyes danced over the array of fresh cakes, breads and pastries, each looking more tantalizing than the last. While I didn't indulge this time, they've been duly noted for a future visit, which, let me assure you, will be sooner rather than later.
First on my list was the Basil & Burrata Bialy, a masterpiece of baked goods that harmoniously blends the freshness of basil with the creamy delight of burrata, all atop a bialy that's as pillowy as clouds in a Renaissance painting. The smoked salt & lemon cream cheese was a revelation, adding a zesty freshness that elevated the bialy to new heights. My only quibble? A personal preference for warmth, to further unlock the flavors nestled within this delightful creation.
Then came the Mozzarella, Rosemary, & Garlic Quiche - a slice of heaven, if ever there was one. The egginess, creamy texture, and aromatic herbs combined to create a symphony of flavors, all encased in a crust that was flaky yet robust, unlike any I've tasted before. It was so divine, I briefly considered a heist to take the whole pie home with me.
The ambiance of Wentworth & Fenn is akin to a cozy coffee shop, with a smattering of tables and chairs that invite you to sit and savor. The soundtrack of my morning? "Breaking the Habit" by Linkin Park, adding a nostalgic yet energizing backdrop to an already perfect morning.
So, to my fellow Charlotteans, let this be a call to arms - or rather, a call to forks! In a world where the convenience of chain stores tempts us away from the unique charm of local businesses, let's band together to support the places that make our city truly special. I can't wait to return and dive into their delectable desserts. See you there?
